The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and helps to support the arch of the foot rather like the tension rope of a tension bridge. The fascia can become strained or torn anywhere from its origin beneath the heel to its insertion near the toes and this is termed plantar fasciitis.
